Chapter 18

The mystery of Kor’s disappearance surrounded the camp for weeks and months to come. At the beginning, that was all anyone could talk about. Women and men alike spent many hours postulating about how she escaped, and where she went. It even renewed hope in some of the slaves for their own flight from the camp. One woman was even so bold as to actually try it. She was discovered not far from the camp by Tenon himself. He beat her to death, and encouraged everyone to take note of the severe consequences. The thought of escape didn’t enter a single person’s mind after that horrific display.

Though distraught over the young slave’s disappearance, Tenon was very pleased with the progress his select group had made on building the new huts. Though there was no one to occupy them at the moment, he was ready for his next charge, whenever he or she may show up.

Soon it was time to celebrate the Festival of Min. The pharaoh had decreed four days of rest for the celebration. The slaves all looked forward to the break from their hard labor.

“What do you normally do for the four days?” inquired Sheshamun. She imagined the wonderful party Ramses and Mira were planning on throwing.

“We take the entire time off of work, and spend it relaxing, chatting with our friends, and eating. We absolutely indulge ourselves,” answered Phimeah.

“I pretend to be queen of the camp,” Phu signed and giggled. The other three giggled as well.

“We should do something special,” Sheshamun thought aloud. “Remember when Tenon asked us to help put on a party for the entire camp? Maybe we should remind him about that!” The four girls grinned ear to ear.

Tenon’s spirits were renewed by the young girl’s suggestion. “That’s a great idea, Sheshamun. And no, I had not forgotten about your previous ‘palace celebration.’ Let’s see what we can rustle up in the kitchen. Perhaps you girls can find some way to decorate the dining hall and the outside of the huts. We still have a couple more days to get organized, before the feast begins. I will give you ladies the next two days off to help prepare.”

The four roommates could not believe their luck – two more days off! The next day, the group set to work right away. Sheshamun had never been more focused on anything in her life. “How are the four of us going to accomplish this before the celebration takes place?” The young girl asked Phimeah.

“We definitely need some help,” the twin agreed. “What about Meratiti and her three roommates? They did a great job helping us with our first feast. I’m sure they would be willing to help out once more!”

“That is a fantastic idea! I’ll go find our new friends right now.” Sheshamun ran through the date fields, scouring the area for Meratiti. It took her a good half hour to find the other girl. “I see you have moved to a new section,” Sheshamun greeted her.
